University extension, the teaching of physical-natural themes and contextualized education: new scenarios for the semiarid region

Abstract

University extension constitutes a space for dialogue between the university, schools, and society, articulating scientific knowledge and knowledge produced by local communities.
In Geography, this approach expands the possibilities for teaching physical-natural themes based on the concrete reality of territories.Contextualized education makes it possible to relate relief, soils, climate, water, vegetation, geodiversity, and biodiversity to the everyday experiences of local populations. In the Brazilian Semi-arid region, this perspective values traditional knowledge and strengthens a conception of coexistence with the territory.
Social technologies, such as cisterns, trench reservoirs, stone contour barriers, biodigesters, and mandalas, constitute important pedagogical instruments. These experiences make it possible to integrate theory and practice, transforming the territory into a space for learning and investigation. The articulation between academic science and traditional knowledge fosters participatory, interdisciplinary, and socially committed educational practices. University extension also contributes to the initial and continuing education of teachers by bringing universities closer to schools and communities. In this process, physical-natural components cease to be fragmented contents and are understood in their relationship with society. Thus, a Geography focused on citizenship, sustainability, the appreciation of local knowledge, and responsible coexistence with the Brazilian Semi-arid region is consolidated.
