Abstract

The concept of place in geography, in the humanist perspective, is characterized by being linked to the feelings of belonging, affection and symbolism that people create with their place of experience, while in the Marxist approach, it seeks to understand the social processes in which the subject is inserted. The concept of place becomes, therefore, relevant for the teaching of geography, and it is important to analyze the teaching practice in order to stimulate a significant learning in this category. The present text aims to understand the relevance of the concept of place for the teaching of geography in the perception of teachers from the Municipal Network of Fortaleza - Ceará. From the analysis of the real, we seek support in qualitative research, through interviews, in order to extract information about the teaching practice with regard to teaching in the place. In view of this, it is concluded that the concept of place in geography presents, in the teachers' conception, a way of establishing affective and symbolic relationships between the student and his place, being developed by the teachers from active methodologies, which lead to pedagogical practices for the understanding of the concept.
