Abstract

This article analyzes the categories of time and space in the modern and postmodern period. The investigation used the literature review technique. The first part explains the question of time and space in Modernity, especially from the rise of bourgeois society and capitalism. The second part of this work presents the socio-historical conjuncture of the capitalist structural crisis of 1970 and the societal transformations from it, highlighting the changes in the conception of time and space in the so-called postmodern condition. The third section of this article seeks to explain the compression of time and space in contemporary times, highlighting the debate on the centrality of space. Finally, we conclude that capitalism causes changes within the production system, transforming aspects of Society. The accelerated cultural logic of late capitalism conceives space and time as volatile, flexible, globalized and virtual. The speed of displacement in space creates the sensation of shortening time, which gained new developments at the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st.
