Ecosystem services and identification of environmental impacts resulting from shrimp farming in the fluvio-marine plain of the Jaguaribe river, Ceará – Brazil

Abstract

This study analyzes the relationship between society and nature in the fluvio-marine plain of the Jaguaribe River, Ceará, highlighting the ecosystem services provided by mangroves and the impacts of human activity. A quali-quantitative approach was used, including literature review, geoprocessing, fieldwork, and laboratory analyses. Results show that shrimp farming and unplanned urbanization increase salinity and nutrient levels, reducing mangrove vegetation. The community identifies pollution and deforestation as major issues, affecting fishing and shellfish collection. Integrated management and restoration of degraded areas are essential for mangrove conservation and regional sustainability.
