Production of spatial (in)justices from private education services on Avenida Augusto Montenegro, Belém, Pará, Brazil

Abstract

The process of metropolization of Belém, which took place from the 1960s onwards, led to changes in the configuration of the local urban scenario, especially due to the growth of new axes of expansion in the metropolitan space, as was the case with Avenida Augusto Montenegro. Private basic education institutions, the object of study in this article, are commercial forms that participate markedly in the socioeconomic dynamics of this space. At this juncture, the general objective of this research is aimed at understanding the links between the layout logic of private schools, the unequal production of urban space and the implications in the sphere of spatial justice, in the context of Avenida Augusto Montenegro, more specifically, in the neighborhood Green Park. From bibliographical research and field visits, results were obtained that demonstrate that the expansion of private schools in this sub-center of Belém is based on logic of location and operation linked to the space they occupy, whether on the main avenue, or in its surroundings, sections which mirror such logics in the inequalities produced and (re)produced.
