Abstract

The great transformations that have taken place in the Amazon since the last century have been the result of intense debates involving regional issues, in addition to demanding an understanding of how social processes modify landscapes and ways of life. With the aim of emphasizing these facts, a discipline was created in the 1990s aimed at discussing the Amazon in the school context, with the initial intention of addressing issues such as major projects and other historical events, in addition to being a knowledge exclusively back to school. In this sense, the intention here is to carry out a historical review of the operationalization and paths of the Amazonian Studies discipline as knowledge focused on the regional debate, aiming to investigate its context of creation, compare its trajectory with the area of human sciences, in addition to understand the main discussions proposed by this discipline throughout its history, as well as the contributions brought as school and social knowledge in the Amazon. We started with a bibliographical and documentary survey, in addition to interviews with teachers, through which we found that environmental, cultural, historical and physical aspects are among the most discussed discussions by this curricular component in basic education.
