Abstract

The crisis of representations is an interdisciplinary way of understanding, which has gained representation since the period of cultural and linguistic turns, having as theoretical supports the rise of the post-structural and post-modern approach. The repercussions of the crisis of representations are many, including for the field of geography. This article, with an epistemological bias, aims to elucidate the impact of this way of understanding on geographic thought, without intending to exhaust all possible repercussions. The fact that mainstreams are seen as theoretical imprisonments and the relativization of binarisms and categories are listed and discussed as impacts of the crisis of representations. Subsequently, the growing importance of relative space and intertextuality is problematized, as well as the reordering of relations between the social and cultural dimensions. Finally, the rise of more-than-representational forms of interpretation are also presented as a consequence of the way of understanding in discussion.
