Interiorization of high education and the brazilian regional development: a literature review

Abstract

The present study aims to highlight the relationship between the internalization of public higher education and Brazilian regional development. It is an integrative literature review, carried out in the following databases: DOAJ, SciELO, Google Scholar, Portal Periodicals of Capes and IPEA Knowledge Repository, from 2015 to 2021. The search terms used in the databases were “higher education” AND “higher education expansion” AND “regional development” AND “higher education institutions” AND “internalization of higher education”. The data collection took place in May 2021. Fourteen (14) articles that met the inclusion criteria, all about Brazilian studies were identified. The main development indicators evidenced by the studies were democratization of access to higher education; boosting the economy of the municipalities where the institutions were installed; fostering the job market; demographic and urban space changes and the incorporation of parts of the population previously poorly represented in public universities. The articles were analyzed and showed that the internalization of the IES contributes several factors to the development of the places where the IES were located.
