Large atacarejos and implications in the structuring of the medium-sized city of Castanhal-PA

Abstract

Castanhal is one of the main cities in the State of Pará, with a dynamic commerce and services sector, which, in recent years, has gained more complexity with the arrival of large atacarejo chains. The general objective of the research is to analyze the implications for the structuring of the city of Castanhal arising from the installation of the atacarejos belonging to large national and international networks. Achieving this objective was pursued through a qualitative approach and through bibliographic, documental and fieldwork surveys. The results obtained showed that the installation and operation of the atacarejo stores belonging to large national and international chains (Mix Atacarejo, Assaí Atacadista and Atacadão) do not indicate a process of restructuring the city, but the deepening of the structuring process of Castanhal as a medium-sized city, with the acceleration of the expansion of services in areas outside the center and with the constitution of better infrastructure in these spaces.
