Brazilian Pantanal: indicators of economic and socio-environmental development of agricultural reform settlements

Abstract

This study sought to record and analyze aspects of social and economic development and the form(s) of handling natural elements, from the perspective of socio-environmental sustainability, in 15 rural settlements located in the municipality of Cáceres, Pantanal Norte Mato-Grossense . Between 2018-2019, the exploratory phase was carried out and from September 2019 to February 2020, 1,331 interviews were carried out in the structured modality, within the scope of the Diagnostic Project for Environmental Regularization of Agrarian Reform Settlements (RADIS/UFMT) . Based on knowledge of the study area and the recording of qualitative and quantitative information, the indicators were defined by adapting the assumptions of the Pressure-State-Response Methodology (PER), proposed by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). One of the results showed that there is a weakness in the performance of public authorities in proposing programs and implementing actions that can lead to the socio-environmental sustainability of the researched settlements, as well as the need for processes of productive qualification and technical assistance.
