Abstract

This article analyzes the impacts of higher education on the production of urban space in Sobral, a mid-sized city located in the northern region of Ceará, Brazil. It is based on the premise that higher education institutions (HEIs), when established, generate effects that go beyond the educational sphere and influence the urban fabric. Adopting a qualitative and exploratory approach, the study employs the case study method and relies on bibliographic research, document analysis, student surveys, and interviews with university professors from Sobral’s HEIs. The empirical data reveal five major areas of impact: Sobral’s integration with the regional scale; local economic dynamization; effects on the real estate market and urban structure; patterns of student mobility and migration; and the interiorization of knowledge and academic training. The study concludes that higher education plays a structuring role in the city, fostering spatial reconfigurations, intensifying urban flows, and diversifying land use. These impacts are particularly noticeable in the context of mid-sized cities, requiring analytical approaches that are sensitive to territorial scales and specificities.
