BETWEEN INSECURITY AND HOUSING: THE TRANSFORMATION OF URBAN SPACE IN THE METROPOLITAN MUNICIPALITY OF CAUCAIA/CE

Abstract

The metropolitan space tends to expand real estate production and, in this way, is arranged as a reproduction of the capitalist system, reinforcing private production while also becoming a space that generates socio-spatial inequalities. This paper analyzes the growing real estate production in metropolitan areas, with a focus on the urban center of the municipality of Caucaia, located in the Metropolitan Region of Fortaleza (RMF), in connection with the discourse of urban insecurity that feeds the real estate market and supports condominium-based productivism. The aim is to understand the relationship between metropolitan real estate production and the production of space influenced by urban insecurity in the pursuit of housing. The research employed the following methodological approaches: bibliographic review, survey and interpretation of Violent Intentional Lethal Crimes (CVLI) data, demographic data for population growth and accommodation establishments by type from the IBGE (2010; 2022), and additional data regarding population and municipal characterization provided by IPECE (2017; 2023). The research also included cartographic production related to Caucaia's administrative division and Kernel density estimation (2015-2018), as well as surveys on real estate sales websites such as Viva Real, Zap Imóveis, Trovit, Chaves na Mão, Imóveis Web, and RD Imobiliária to create the mental framework, alongside the development of tables integrated into this study.
