Maputo City: contemporary processes and dynamic

Abstract

The publication of the 2017 census data provides an opportunity to understand the dynamics of Maputo City, 20 years after the publication of the study developed by Araújo. Analyzing the census data, it is possible to understand how each of the three (3) realities of the city (urban, suburban, and peri-urban) was configured over time, while allowing to update (or reject) the "model of spatial organization of urban spaces in Mozambique". This is the main purpose of this article, which starts from a bibliographical review of the various published works on the city of Maputo and, finally, focuses on the analysis of data from the 2017 census. The study appropriates the division of the city of Maputo developed by Araújo, based on the indicators of urbanity (type of economic activity developed by the head of the household, type of housing, water supply conditions, basic sanitation  and densification in the occupation of space) and concluded that the city is currently organized according to a process of urbanization that brings together the Western model of urbanization and the local model, reflected in the forms of resistance of social groups in need of a city that is excluded.
