Abstract

This article deals with the process of formation of territories of violence and fear in Sobral-CE, a municipality located approximately 230 km from the state capital, Fortaleza. Based on narratives from a resident of a territory controlled by a criminal faction and a local press professional (small selection of sources from a broader research), we sought to analyze how some concepts dear to geography, such as territory, territoriality, segregated space, socio-spatial segregation and fragmentation of the socio-political-spatial fabric, can be important tools for understanding the phenomenon of urban violence. Authors such as Rogério Haesbaert, Marcelo Lopes de Souza, Roberto Lobato Corrêa and Maria Encarnação Beltrão Spósito, among others, bring fundamental contributions so that we can reflect on the problem of violence not only as a social fact, but also a consequence of society's relations with the space.
