Abstract

Critical feminist theory holds that patriarchy and other gender-based oppression forms are deeply embedded in social, political, and economic structures. One of the principal concepts in feminist critical theory is "intersectional oppression", which emphasizes that oppression experiences are not uniform for all subjects, and vary according to their position in the social structure. They seek to question existing power structures and promote constructing a more equitable society free of oppression. Intersectionality as a concept-methodological tool, proposed by Black feminists, incorporated by Geography allows a comprehensive and critical analysis of inequalities and social dynamics in space, considering the intersections between different structuring markers of capitalism. The text aims to emphasize the concept’s power for Geography. For this purpose, a bibliographic review is conducted, showing data from the National Household Sample Survey (PNAD) regarding the so-called “domestic services” and the gender variable. We conclude that intersectionality allows the observance of complex and different social categories, expanding the understanding of oppression and privilege experiences in the geographic space, and identifying more effective strategies and policies to promote social and spatial justice.
