Abstract

This article presents a systematic review based on an exploratory-descriptive method aiming to analyze and describe the chronological evolution of remote sensing in the study of degraded areas in the Amazon. For this, a systematic search was used in the scientific literature in the “Web of Science” and “Google Scholar” databases, when the following descriptors were used: “remote sensing”, “Amazon” and “degradation”. Considering only studies published between the years 2000 and 2022, after reading the title and abstract of articles potentially suitable for composing the review, and applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, a total of 19 articles were selected for this study. The results pointed to the importance of remote sensing in the context of detection and monitoring of degraded areas, as it was noticeable through the analyzed literature that remote sensing products have made possible undeniable advances in monitoring the Amazon in recent years. In particular, the temporal evolution of sensing for the purpose of environmental monitoring could be noted from the emergence of new techniques and/or incorporation of tools to increase the robustness of spatial analyses.
