Abstract

The Environmental Protection Area (APA) of Guadalupe was created by the Government of Pernambuco with the objective of protecting and conserving the coastal ecosystems and traditional culture, aiming at sustainable development. However, the area faces challenges related to tourism management, resulting in socio-environmental conflicts between the various actors involved in this activity. Our research analyzed the socio-environmental conflicts arising from tourism in this APA, using interview techniques, documentary research and thematic cartography. Conflicts in the "visitation zone" are directly or indirectly related to tourism, especially those of nautical tourism. The disorderly use of vessels in estuarine areas is one of the most conflicting practices and potentially harmful to coastal ecosystems. Therefore, we recommend that waterway management actions be included in the management planning of the conservation unit, especially in relation to vessel traffic for nautical tours in the visitation zone. This may involve defining clear regulations for vessel traffic, effective enforcement, raising awareness among tour operators and visitors about the importance of environmental preservation, and involving the local community in this decision-making process.
