Abstract

This article was prompted by the following provocation: how do city planning and management impact the performance of care work? The research aimed to investigate in the published literature and secondary data, the processes hidden in the sexual division of reproductive and care work, as well as to discuss the link between these and the social-environmental planning and management of cities. It also presents a brief analysis on the intersectionality intertwined in these relationships associating gender, race and class. The intersection of these categories is essential for understanding how people who perform care work, whether paid or not, are affected by the city. To investigate these issues, the research used a bibliography based on feminist theory and focused on the book Feminism for the 99%: a manifesto, a text that helps us to underline the need, for the exercise of a truly feminist urbanism, for urban planning and management geared towards the needs of the social majority. The discussion took place in the light of statistical data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics - IBGE, the Institute for Applied Economic Research - IPEA and the Gender Equality Observatory for Latin America and the Caribbean - OIG.
