The Genesis and rural-urban dynamics of Santa Cruz do Rio Pardo - SP: 1870 – 1950

Abstract

The objective of the work is to present the genesis of Santa Cruz do Rio Pardo, a city located in the Midwest region of São Paulo, which was “boca do sertão” (MONBEIG, 1984), being an important element, together with the role of the railway and the coffee expansion, to understand the process of creating this urban center. The rural - urban dynamics is discussed in the context of the genesis of this municipality, considering the period between 1870 (creation of the municipality) and 1950, when coffee lost importance in the municipal economy as well as the urbanization process and rural-urban dynamics intensified. has changed. In order to carry out the work, regarding the understanding of the genesis of the city, we consulted the bibliography on the history of Santa Cruz do Rio Pardo as well as census data, with the main purpose of analyzing the urban rural dynamics during the mentioned period. A field survey was carried out in June 2018, in order to collect information about the historical aspects and the rural-urban dynamics, not clarified by the consulted bibliography. It was understood that, although the origin of Santa Cruz do Rio Pardo predates the coffee expansion and the insertion of the railway, the development of the municipality is linked to the two elements mentioned, important in the rural-urban dynamics.
