Abstract

The understanding of the concrete reality of the Brazilian semi-arid region, through the lens of Geography, constitutes the founding premise of this study. Based on the transformations in the landscape of the Sub-middle São Francisco River region, this work analyzes the insertion of irrigated fruit farming as a strategy for subordinating this empirical extension to agribusiness production circuits on both national and international scales. To this end, the study is grounded in the centrality of the State in planning and executing actions that established the region as a benchmark in fruit production. The methodology was based on bibliographic and documentary research, as well as fieldwork. The results reveal that state action was the essential pillar for the productive structuring and consolidation of the regional territory.
