Materiality and resistances in the urban amazon: considering the socio-spatial aspects of the historicity of the cabanagem Neighborhood in Belém/PA

Abstract

In Brazil, it is common to link urbanization to the process of metropolization and, more specifically, to the outskirts. Metropolization, however, is not to be confused with a simple delimitation. There are public and private agents that exert influence in the area covered by Metropolitan Regions (MR). In light of the changes that have occurred over the years, the following question arises: what is the relation between the process of metropolization and the formation of the Cabanagem neighborhood, in the city of Belém/PA? Considering the above, this article aims to discuss the process of metropolization in the Metropolitan Region of Belém (MRB) and its impacts on the occupation of the Cabanagem neighborhood, focusing on the insertion of the road expansion axis of Augusto Montenegro Avenue. The methodological procedures were: bibliographic review, documentary surveys, fieldwork, and geotechnologies. The results show that, whether intentionally or not, the urbanization model, in its various aspects, has reconfigured the urban organization of the municipalities that make up the MRB and its surroundings.
