Soil use and cover in the southern lowlands of Bahia: the application of remote sensors in the Pratigi environmental protection area between 1991 and 2010

The Pratigi Environmental Protection Area is located in the Southern Lowlands sub-region in the State of Bahia. It covers the municipalities of Ibirapitanga, Igrapiúna, Ituberá, Nilo Peçanha and Piraí do Norte, totaling an area of 472,455 km². In the present extension, there are one hundred and sixty communities, some of them traditionally occupied, in addition to a complex land structure and diverse agriculture. Thus, spatial modeling studies aim to understand the transformations identified in the processed images. The methodology is structured in the preparation of historical maps with resources from the Geographic Information System (GIS) and fieldwork. Geography reads this process of land use and occupation in a decisive manner, as it provides the necessary attributes for understanding spatial transformations.
