Solo teaching has proved to be an important resource in school teaching practices when associated with other subjects, although it has not yet received due notoriety. This article aimed to report the importance of practical teaching and field activities for the development of knowledge in soils and environmental education with elementary school students from public and private schools in the city of São Luís- MA. The activities were developed with 6th and 7th grade students from the o Bom Pastor School and the Adventist School and 9th grade students from the José Gonçalves do Amaral Raposo basic education unit in 2019. Expository and practical classes were held at the University premises Federal do Maranhão - Dom Delgado Campus with the objective of encouraging students to associate the contents covered in the classroom with the environment around them. It was found that the students' knowledge about the themes that involve the soil are still quite superficial and this is a reflection of the educational system itself limited to unilateral teaching practices, without much interaction with other disciplinestais, such as biology and chemistry, causing losses in the formulation of a reflective critical knowledge of students, especially in the process of environmental awareness. On the other hand, the realization of practical activities in the field and in the classroom with the handling of didactic resources enabled a vast exchange of knowledge that provoked in the students a series of questions and reflections about what they were experiencing.
